We were very lucky to have Graeme and Kieron from Sunderland Tennis Centre in to offer a 30 minute taster session to every class from Early Years to Year 6.  The tennis coaches were very impressed with how well our children listened, followed instructions, helped each other, tried their best and had lots of fun. We have at least one child who attends the Tennis Centre every Saturday and they are hoping after such a fabulous taster day that more children from our school will join the Tennis Club.

On Thursday 22nd June we held an event for parents and children to join in lots of exciting healthy activities. The children and parents had a fantastic time making fruity smoothies, fruit kebabs and salad wraps. We also had the lovely ladies, Donna and Christine from the Live Life Well Service, offering lots of support and advice on how to stay happy and healthy.
We also had the brilliant George in, with a variety of sports games and exercises to join in with. Both the parents and children really enjoyed the day!

We have been working in partnership with Bellatorum Motor Cycle Club and other ‘friends’ of the school to raise money to support the extension of our outdoor provision.

We have to date had outstanding support-see below:

Spring Term Events:

  • Sponsored Witches and Wizards themed walk on Saturday 1st April along Roker Marina supported by Bellatorum Motor Cycle Club.  Very well attended by children, staff, family and friends of Sunningdale.  Raised £5143.10
  • Easter Hamper provided by the bike club raised £157  Total raised in Spring Term £5200.10

  • We have bought more balance bikes, helmets, 3 x basket ball hoops, 3x new outdoor swings.
  • We are now planning on buying a new shed to store the disability bikes and buy accessories to create sensory sheds, 2 wheeler bikes, badminton stands, water play outdoor accessories.
  • Total raised this academic year £10,374.10

To parent Garry Watson and his colleagues at AMEC Foster Wheeler on the oil rigs for their most generous donation of £1,810. Garry tells us that everyone in all departments on the ‘rig’ took part in the fund raising! Everyone at Sunningdale sends a ‘big thank you’ to everyone who helped raise this tremendous amount. Garry and Gemma came into school this week to present the cheques to Celia Wright (Head Teacher) and the children in Class 5.

A ‘big’ Thank you to everyone who has collected and donated vouchers for school. To date we have collected over 13,000 Sainsbury’s vouchers this year compared to last year’s 5600.We are now busy ordering new equipment for the children to use to support their learning experiences.

All the children across school had the wonderful experience of taking part in the ‘Living Eggs’ programme. Children watched over the eggs, had the joy of seeing them hatch from their eggs and then undertook the delicate task of looking after them. The children developed their caring skills and showed incredible engagement for the whole 2 weeks of the project. Happily the chicks have now moved onto a new life!

Handling small animals such as snakes and spiders can often be a daunting experience for children but Zoo Lab came into school with a whole range of small creatures and made the experience so enjoyable that children were happy to hold animals that they may never have touched before and learnt all about how to care for them, what they ate and how they lived. An excellent practical experience to assist learning in a whole range of areas.

Class 5 enjoyed a trip out to the farm yesterday courtesy of the Variety Club. The children had a fabulous time interacting with the animals and enjoying a tractor ride.

Thank you Variety Club.

All the children had a very enjoyable ‘active’ time in our recent school sports day. The day consisted of the opportunity to take part in a range of different sporting activities that not only engaged children in being ‘active’ but helped promote physical, collaborative and competitive skills in a fun way. A tiring and enjoyable day for all!

Children from Early Years had a great time with their parents at a summer Teddy Bears picnic. They not only enjoyed picnic ‘treats’ but had an opportunity to play and learn together with their parents. Governors and multi-agency professionals were also on hand to provide advice and discuss current progress.

We have had great success this year when Class 8 attended the Sportsability Festival at Silksworth Sport Centre.  Three of our sport stars were invited to join a team of pupils from other schools to represent Sunderland against South Tyneside in the Parallel challenge.  We are delighted to announce they are through the final in January. Go Sunningdale Sport Stars!
Key Stage 2 have also welcomed Dan Turland from Newcastle Falcons for an All Stars Tag Rugby taster session.  Children from Classes 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 had such a good time we've invited Dan to return to school in Spring Term 2 to coach our children and deliver weekly bespoke tag Rugby sessions.
It's not only our older children who are keeping active, our Pre-school are full of water babies and they have been the first class to attend assembly to receive their ASA Discovery Ducklings certificates and badges.
Our lunchtime yoga, judo and football clubs are as popular as ever and our new after school clubs have proved to be a hit, with Soft play/Light room club over subscribed and the Street Dance Club getting ready to perform their routine for invited families and friends .
