Supporting Independence in Everyday Life Skills

Event Details

Empowering pupils to succeed in dressing, eating, and personal care

Presented by Michelle Crossley – Functional Pathway Lead and Independence Subject Lead, Sunningdale School

Why Independence Matters:
Independence in everyday life skills is crucial for pupils with SEND. Developing abilities in dressing, eating, and personal care not only fosters self-confidence and dignity, but also promotes greater participation in school, social inclusion, and long-term life outcomes. Supporting pupils to achieve these skills equips them with the tools to navigate daily routines safely and successfully, both at school and at home.

This online training session is designed to equip staff with effective strategies to support pupils in developing these essential life skills. The interactive and practical format will provide real-life examples and opportunities for discussion.

In this session, you will learn to:

  • Improve pupils’ ability to dress and undress independently
  • Teach pupils to prepare simple meals
  • Support safe eating skills and reduce risk
  • Develop effective approaches to toilet training

What participants will gain:

  • Practical strategies to use immediately in school or home settings
  • Understanding of task analysis, prompting, and fading support
  • Ideas for adapting activities for pupils with additional needs
  • Increased confidence in promoting independence and dignity

Who should attend?
Teachers, teaching assistants, SEN staff, support workers, and anyone involved in supporting pupils with personal care and life skills
